Uma Dasgupta Death: Actress Uma Dasgupta died in Kolkata at the age of 84. He died on 18 November. She was battling cancer for many years. The news of his demise was confirmed by his relative, actor and politician Chiranjeet Chakraborty. Uma Dasgupta was seen playing the role of Durga in Satyajit Ray’s film Pather Panchali. A scene from Satyajit Ray’s 1955 film where Durga (Uma Dasgupta) and Appu (Subir Banerjee) see the train for the first time is very famous. Subir Banerjee said- I remember the shooting of the film, here we used to tease each other. Used to throw twigs at each other. Sister was 14 years old and I was 9, we were like real brothers and sisters.
According to Indian Express, Subir Banerjee, remembering Uma Dasgupta, said – ‘She was very kind. This was his first film. But I depended on him for guidance. I remember in a rain sequence, where he was supposed to die at the end, we were asked to sit under a berry tree for the whole day. We were waiting for the rain to come. Kakababu (Satyajit Ray) made us sit there for hours. We had no other way than to entertain ourselves. So we were playing word games. They were teasing each other. Then when the rains came we were shivering. He held me tightly just like it should have happened in the film.
