This species of termite was found on Earth about 38 million years ago. A team of international researchers led by Assistant Professor Nobuaki Mizumoto of Auburn University has studied this fossil frozen in amber. Amber is the fossil of the sticky substance of the tree which is like glue and solidifies after coming out of the tree. These may be millions of years old.
These creatures were completely preserved in this amber in which both termites were stuck to each other. This type of behavior is seen in many types of insects. Scientists say that this behavior is very important for them to form a colony because during this time they also search for the right place for the colony nearby. Scientists say that information about such behavior proves to be very useful and important for the study of living organisms.
