Eighth Day:- Maa Mahagauri
Mother Mahagauri is the presiding deity of the eighth day of Shardiya Navratri. According to Navadurga Granth (a reputed publication), she is named Mahagauri because of her ‘Gaur’ (fair) complexion. On the advice of Narad, she had resolved to marry Lord Mahadev. For this he also performed severe penance. As a result of this harsh penance, his complexion turned black. When Lord Mahadev, pleased with her penance, came to grant her the boon, he washed Parvati with Ganga water and removed the blackness from her body. Tulsidas ji has mentioned the penance of Parvati in his work. Their fair complexion is compared to conch shell and moon.
