Sharjeel Imam Bail Pleas Delhi High Court To Hear Today 30 January 2023

Sharjeel Imam Bail Plea: The Delhi High Court is going to hear two separate applications of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Sharjeel Imam today. In these two petitions, Imam has sought bail and interim bail in a sedition case related to the 2020 riots. The court can give its verdict on this matter today.

Last year, the Lower Court had invoked IPC sections 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting enmity), 153B (acts prejudicial to national integration), 505 (statements made with intent to mischief) and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act against Imam. 13 had ordered framing of charges. Imam had reportedly given a speech at JNU on 13 December 2019 and Aligarh Muslim University on 16 December 2019, where he called for the separation of Assam and the rest of the Northeast from India.

What happened in the last hearing?

Earlier on January 17, the matter was heard. A bench of Justice Siddharth Mridul and Justice Talwant Singh is hearing the matter. The bench had said during the hearing that both the applications are related to the same FIR and the same issues cannot be raised in them. Both of them will be heard together on January 30 as the same issue cannot be raised again and again.

Delhi Police had filed the chart sheet

Let me tell you, the Delhi Police had filed a chart sheet against Sharjeel for his provocative speeches. In 2013, Sharjeel completed his PG degree in Modern History from JNU. He belongs to Jehanabad district of Bihar. Due to non-hearing of bail petitions, he is still in jail. Today it can be decided whether the Imam will get bail or not.
