Versatile actress Smita Patil, born on 17 October 1955 in Mumbai, was educated in Marathi medium schools. After studies, she started reading news in Marathi in Mumbai Doordarshan. Maithili Rao has written Smita Patil’s biography titled ‘Smita Patil A Brief Incandescence’, in which she narrated an interesting anecdote about Smita Patil’s Doordarshan.
Maithili Rao had told in Smita’s biography, “Jyotsna Kirpekar, a friend of Smita, used to read news on Bombay Doordarshan and her husband’s name was Deepak Kirpekar, who was a photographer by profession and during his profession he often used to take pictures of Smita. .”
Fallen photo changed fate
During this time, once Deepak had gone to Doordarshan Kendra with her photographs, where as soon as he entered, Smita’s photographs fell and he started arranging the photographs on the ground. During this time, Mumbai Doordarshan Director PV Krishnamurthy, who was passing by, noticed the pictures. Suddenly he asked, “Whose pictures are these?”
Then what was left? When Deepak told him about Smita, he said that he wanted to meet her.
However, Smita was not ready for this work and after much persuasion, she agreed to go to Doordarshan Kendra. The special thing is that in the audition, when Smita was asked to sing something of her choice, she sang nothing but the national anthem of Bangladesh “Amar Shonar Bangla”. The director liked her voice so much that he immediately selected her as a news anchor. After this, Smita started reading news in Marathi in Mumbai Doordarshan.

Smita Patil married already married actor Raj Babbar. She has a son from Raj Babbar, Prateik Babbar, who is an actor and has appeared in many other films along with ‘Aarakshan’. Smita shocked her fans at the age of just 31. He died on 13 December 1986.
