According to Smita Patil’s biography, a photographer named Deepak Kirpekar had clicked Smita Patil’s photo. Which he had taken to Doordarshan. Then a picture of Smita Patil fell on the ground. When Deepak Kirpekar started picking her up, Mumbai Doordarshan director PV Krishnamurthy’s eyes fell on Smita’s picture and he asked, “Whose pictures are these?”
After this Krishnamurthy expressed his desire to meet Smita Patil. When he met her, he talked to Smita about anchoring, but the actress did not agree with him. But then after a lot of persuasion, he sang the national anthem of Bangladesh “Amar Shonar Bangla” in the audition.
Along with Smita Patil’s beauty, her melodious voice also impressed the director and he immediately selected her as a news anchor. After this, Smita started reading news in Marathi on Mumbai Doordarshan.
One day, while watching TV, famous film director Shyam Benegal’s eyes fell on Smita and he liked her very much. The director had then decided that he would make his next film with Smita.
