Sniffer Dog Astro Dies: Astro, a police dog working as DSP (Dog Service Police) in Madurai Central Jail, Tamil Nadu, died on Friday (January 17, 2025). After Astro’s death, he was given a final farewell with full respect in the jail premises. The police also paid their last respects in the jail premises and a 21-gun salute was also given.

According to The Hindu, 10-year-old sniffer dog Astro was serving in the sniffer squad of Madurai Central Jail. According to the police, Astro was of Labrador Retriever breed and held the rank of ‘DSP’ in the police. Astro was involved in the investigation of drugs and narcotics cases.

‘Phantom’ gave his life for the country

Apart from Astro, many sniffer dogs of the country have served in the police or army, due to whose exploits the country still remembers them. In October last year Phantom, the brave man of the army dog ​​squad, was martyred in the operation against terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army had paid tribute to the dog ‘Phantom’ martyred in the Akhnoor encounter on 30 October and saluted his sacrifice. In fact, Phantom Dog had made the supreme sacrifice in the operation conducted against terrorists near Asan in Sunderbani sector of Akhnoor, Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from this, during the Mumbai attacks in 2008, a sniffer dog named ‘Caesar’ had detected the bomb, due to which the lives of many people were saved.
