Social Media Platform Social media giant X (formerly Twitter) has told the Delhi High Court that the Centre’s decision to block the account of Hindutva Watch (@HindutvaWatchIn) was unfair and disproportionate.
X has given this answer in response to the petition of Jammu and Kashmir journalist Raqib Hameed. Rakib used to run it and he challenged the blocking of this account in January 2024. The High Court will next hear this case on October 3.
X said- ready to restore the account
According to X, he had objected to the Centre’s blocking proposal, but the government continued with the order. The X told the court that if the High Court orders, it is ready to restore the account, but the X argued that Hameed’s writ petition was not conscious against him as this platform was only a mediator. It was not part of the “State” as defined under Article 12 of the Constitution.

The Union Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) had issued a notice to Ax this January, listing several accounts, including Hindutva Watch. The government had said that all these accounts were “inciting violence and ignoring the rules of public law, hence they should be closed.”

During the court hearing, X said in its objections that the ministry had marked the post on Hindutva Watch as “inflammatory” without any basis. Some of these posts were six months to a year old. The ministry nevertheless went ahead and directed X to close the account.

Social media platform X told the High Court that he had also requested the Ministry to hear the review committee.
