South Korea sees rise in Covid infections among children as summer wave spreads

South Korea Covid-19 Rise: South Korea’s disease control agency recently reported that the amount of the COVID-19 virus in sewage treatment water has doubled within a single week. According to a report by Yonhap news agency, under the wastewater monitoring program run by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), the local sewage treatment plant recorded 47,640 viruses per milliliter in the second week of August, which is much higher than the 24,602 per milliliter of the previous week.

This increase is happening due to the rapid spread of infection during the summer holidays.

The number of patients in the hospital increased

The number of corona patients in South Korea’s hospitals is continuously increasing. Last week, there were 878 corona patients in South Korea’s hospitals. This week, their number has increased to 1359.

In Chungcheong Province in particular, the number of children with COVID infections from Aug. 5-9 was 301, while from July 22-26 the number was just 54. “Most COVID-19 pediatric patients have mild symptoms, which allows the virus to spread more easily,” said Choi Yong-jae, president of the Korea Children’s Hospital Association.

Data compiled by the Korea Children’s Hospital Association from 42 paediatric hospitals showed there were 1,080 children with Covid-19 from August 5-9, while there were 387 between July 22 and 26, Yonhap news agency reported.

Preparations by the Korean government to deal with the infection

The South Korean government is also planning to restart its vaccination campaign in October due to the sudden increase in Covid cases. Under this campaign, vaccines will be given free of cost to high-risk groups.
