Study in Abroad: Canada will reduce the number of international students, know what options Indian students will have?

Due to the increasing number of foreign students, Canada is currently struggling with housing affordability. In such a situation, Canada has decided to reduce the number of foreign students in the country. Immigration Minister Mark Miller has also made an important announcement in this regard. However, the date of implementation of this order has not been revealed yet.

40 percent Indians in the student group

According to official Canadian statistics, the number of study permit holders in Canada has tripled in the last decade. In fact, during 2013, study permits were given to three lakh students, whereas in 2023 this figure has crossed nine lakhs. It is worth noting that 40 percent of the students applying to study in Canada during 2022 were Indians, due to which they have become the largest group of foreign students in this country.

The Government of Canada made this announcement

In his statement, the Immigration Minister of Canada informed about the implementation of many new rules for foreign students coming to Canada for studies, in which details related to the fund will also have to be disclosed. Till now, foreign students studying in Canada had to provide information about the first year’s tuition fees and travel expenses, plus an additional amount of $10,000. According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), now this amount has been increased from $10,000 to $20,635. It has been told in the report that this amount has been decided according to the expenses required every year for living in Canada.

40 percent of Indians’ applications were rejected

You will be surprised to know that this is not the only challenge in the way of Indian students who want to study in Canada. In fact, according to a report by Toronto Star, about 40 percent of student visa applications received from India during the second half of 2023 were rejected. This is the highest number of rejections among all the countries. In all these applications the reason for rejection was stated as other or unspecified. At the same time, some visa applications were rejected because they did not meet the financial criteria.

What are the options for Indian students?

Now the question arises that if not Canada then what options are left for Indian students? According to experts, considering their budget, Indian students will now have to look for other options instead of Canada, America, UK and Australia. Experts have advised to look at Ireland, South Korea and Taiwan as alternatives. Ireland’s universities are ranked among the top-3 globally. At the same time, South Korea has started a project to promote foreign students, the aim of which is to invite three lakh foreign students for studies by 2027. Apart from this, Taiwan has also set a target of inviting 3.20 lakh foreign students to its country by 2030.
