One such progressive farmer is 85 years old Phoolmati Amma, who is surprising people with her hard work even at this stage of life. Phoolmati Amma is in news for achieving record production of sesame from her fields. On the occasion of Farmer’s Day, the Agriculture Department has supported these efforts of Phoolmati Amma.
Record production taken from sesame cultivation
85 year old Phoolmati is a resident of Bhulanpur village of Ramiyabehad block in Lakhimpur, Uttar Pradesh. She does farming in her own village and these days she is also motivating other farmers with her efforts. Phoolmati does organic farming on her 8 acres of land. He has produced about 10 quintals of sesame from one hectare of cultivation, which is much more than the average yield of sesame.
These efforts of 85-year-old Phoolmati have been recognized by the Agriculture Department and honored by giving a check of Rs.7,000 on the occasion of Farmer’s Day. Apart from sesame, the 85-year-old woman farmer also does organic farming of sugarcane and paddy and is being recognized as the highest crop producer in her area.

Increased trend of farmers
Government is constantly trying to make farmers self-sufficient in the field of oilseeds. Sesame is also a major oilseed crop. The oil extracted from it has many medicinal properties, which is used as food as well as medicine. Sesame oil consumption has increased in the last few years, so farmers are also adopting ways to increase sesame production.
For good productivity of oilseeds, there is now a special focus on increasing the fertile power of the land. That’s why farmers are moving towards organic farming leaving the path of traditional farming. This method is getting good quality production at low cost. The crops grown from organic farming get good prices in the market. If farming does not cost much then the farmer also gets some profit.
Farming becomes less cost
In the last few years the rising inflation has also affected the farmers, so now the government and agricultural scientists have inspired to cultivate those crops and techniques Has been done, which can give expected production in less expenditure and sesame is also one of the crops.
These days the prices of oil are skyrocketing. In such a situation, cultivation of oilseed crops is proving to be a profitable deal. Sesame crop is equal to boon for areas with less water. The savings from less manure, less fertilizer and less irrigation and the income from beekeeping with sesame have attracted the attention of farmers.
When to cultivate sesame
For information, let us tell you that sesame is cultivated in Kharif season. Light sandy-loam soil is considered most suitable for sesame cultivation. Sesame is sown every year by the second week of July. Does not require much manure and fertilizers. By simply monitoring the crop and managing it properly, the crop gets ready within 80 to 85 days.
Production is available up to 2.5 quintals from each bigha field. Currently, oilseeds are being cultivated on about 42,247 hectares in the country. Many state governments are also motivating farmers to cultivate oilseeds by giving subsidy on seeds and input grants.
