This variety is CO-0238, which increased the productivity of sugarcane by 1.5 percent a few years ago and the recovery growth of sugar was also recorded by 2 percent from CO-0238 variety. The sugarcane farmers who cultivated it benefited a lot.
Co-0238 increased the production of sugarcane
According to the media reports, in the year 2016-17, the sugar mills of Uttar Pradesh also produced maximum sugar and it occupied the first position. The credit for this success goes to a special variety Co-0238, which not only helped the farmers in increasing the productivity of sugarcane, but also saw a lot of improvement in the recovery of sugarcane juice.
As a result of this, when there was a decline of 2% in the production of sugar in the whole country during 2019, then UP had reached a record level of 126.38 lakh tonnes of sugar production.
Recently, Minister of State for Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Sanjeev Balyan also mentioned about this special variety of sugar production and highlighted the need to find an alternative to Co-0238 variety to improve sugar production again.
Sugar production increased in Maharashtra
Undoubtedly Uttar Pradesh is the largest producer of sugarcane, but now Maharashtra is winning in sugar production. According to the report of the Indian Sugar Mills Association, in the current sugarcane season (October 2022 to September 2023), the production of 156.8 lakh tonnes of sugar has been recorded till January 15, compared to 150.8 lakh tonnes till the same period last year.
Maharashtra produced 58.87 lakh tonnes of sugar last year, while this year it has increased to 60.3 lakh tonnes. Growth in the production of sugar has also been registered in the sugar mills of Uttar Pradesh. Last year, 40.2 lakh tonnes of Tini production was received from the sugar mills of UP, whereas this year 40.7 lakh tonnes production has been registered.

Large production of sugar in these states as well
According to the report of the Indian Sugar Mills Association, Maharashtra has registered a production of 137.2 lakh tonnes of sugar in the year 2021-22 and with this Maharashtra has become the largest sugar producer in the country, although Uttar Pradesh is also in second place in this list. Is.
Karnataka is at number three, where mills have produced 33.6 lakh tonnes of sugar as compared to last year’s 32.7 lakh tonnes. The names of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat are also included in this list, where good growth has been registered in the production of sugar. The production of sugar in Tamil Nadu has increased from 2.1 lakh tonnes to 3.6 lakh tonnes, while Gujarat has also registered a production of 4.8 lakh tonnes as against 4.6.
Sugar exports increased
According to the statistics of the Ministry of Agriculture, a record increase has been recorded in sugar exports. In the year 2017-18, the export of sugar was limited to 6.8 lakh metric tonnes, but during the year 2021, a record growth has been registered in it.
During this period, 110 lakh metric tonnes of sugar has been exported from the country. On this, the Indian Sugar Mill Association said that sugar mills have contracted 55 tonnes of sugar for export, out of which 18 lakh tonnes have already been exported. Last season also 112 lakh metric tonnes of sugar was exported.
