Former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar and senior BJP leader Sushil Kumar Modi (72) died of cancer at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi on Monday. Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary shared the information about Sushil Modi’s demise on social media.

Modi, one of the veteran leaders of Bihar BJP, worked tirelessly to bring the party to power in the state. He had close relations with JD-U chief and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and worked with him for a long time as Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister. As Finance Minister of Bihar, Sushil Modi also effectively played the role of head of the States Empowered Committee in the GST Council. The trio of Sushil Modi, Lalu Prasad and Nitish Kumar has always been important in Bihar politics. All three were products of the JP movement during the Emergency.

Started from the General Secretary of Patna University Students Union

Sushil Modi’s political career started in 1973 when he became the General Secretary of Patna University Students Union. The special thing is that their president at that time was Lalu Prasad Yadav.

Lalu was sent to jail

Sushil Modi was among those leaders who exposed the role of Lalu Prasad Yadav in the fodder scam. In this case, he himself had filed a public interest litigation against Lalu Prasad in Patna High Court.

Became MLA for the first time in 1990

His debut in active politics was by winning the Patna Central seat in 1990. This seat is now called Kumhrar. He won again in 1995 and 2000. In 2004, he was elected MP from Bhagalpur seat. In 2005, when Nitish Kumar’s JD-U and BJP formed the coalition government in Bihar, Modi became the Deputy Chief Minister for the first time.

Gave invaluable contribution in the rise of BJP in Bihar.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP President JP Nadda and many other party leaders have expressed grief over the demise of Sushil Modi. PM Modi wrote on social media, I am deeply saddened by the demise of Sushil Modi, my valued colleague in the party and my friend for decades. He has made an invaluable contribution to the rise of BJP and its successes in Bihar. At the same time, Shah said, Bihar has lost a pillar of politics. The void left by his demise will not be filled for a long time. Rajnath said, Sushil Modi’s long political career was dedicated to public service and welfare of the poor. Nadda recalled his relations with Sushil Modi from ABVP days and said that his entire life was dedicated to Bihar.
