Who was Tabassum?
Kiran Bala was born on 9 July 1944 in Mumbai whose father was Hindu Ayodhyanath Sachdev and mother was Muslim Asgari Begum. Ayodhyanath was an Indian freedom fighter, while his mother Asgari Begum was also a freedom fighter, apart from this she was also a writer and journalist.
In an interview, Tabassum had said, âMy father named me âTabassumâ but my motherâs religion remained in my mind, my mother named me âKiran Balaâ and my fatherâs religion also remained in my mind. On paper my name was Kiran Bala which became Kiran Bala Govil after marriage. I kept my fatherâs name in films and the world knows me by this name.â
Tabassumâs marriage and children
Tabassum was married to Vijay Govil who was the elder brother of TV actor Arun Govil. You must have seen Arun Govil playing the role of Lord Ram in the famous serial âRamayanaâ. Tabassum Govil was the sister-in-law of actor Arun Govil. Tabassum and Vijay Govilâs son Hoshang Govil worked in films but was a flop.
But now he works as a producer and also manages his motherâs YouTube channel which contains interviews. Vijay Govil died in the year 2007. Tabassum Govil also died on 18 November 2022. In her last days, she told people stories of the film world which you can watch on her YouTube channel.

Tabassum played the childhood role of Nargis in the 1947 film Mera Suhaag when she was just 4 years old. After this she did many films as a child artist. Even after growing up, Tabassum has worked in many films like âDeedarâ, âJoganâ, âBaharâ, âBadi Bahanâ, âSangramâ, âAfsanaâ. In the year 1972, Tabassumâs show Phool Khile Gulshan-Gulshan used to come in which she was the anchor and this show was very popular on Doordarshan.
Tabassum was considered as the younger sister of most actors including legends like Rajesh Khanna, Sunil Dutt, Raj Kapoor. Veteran filmmaker BR Chopra considered her as his daughter. Tabassum has interviewed almost all the stars and a few years ago she started her own YouTube channel âTabassum Talkiesâ which is now run by her son.
