‘Tell us what steps have been taken for safety’, doctors of RG Kar Hospital wrote a letter to the Bengal government.


RG Kar Medical College Case: Junior doctors of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Thursday (October 10) wrote a letter to the West Bengal government, demanding safety and security of doctors in hospitals since the last meeting with them. Has been asked to give details of steps taken regarding basic facilities.

Earlier, doctors had held talks with the Chief Secretary of West Bengal, but no result was achieved. Junior doctors said that we were disappointed that it took you 96 hours of indefinite hunger strike even to call us for a meeting. We know that our last two emails on September 26 and 29, 2024 were not even responded to, despite us returning to work with the confidence that the state government is seriously considering our demands. >

Junior doctors made this demand from Mamata government

Junior doctors, in their letter to Mamata, have said that there should be immediate justice for trainee doctors, removal of the Health Secretary due to administrative inefficiency and corruption, a centralized referral system should be implemented in all hospitals and medical colleges.

The doctors have also demanded installation of digital bed vacancy monitors in all hospitals, creation of task forces in each hospital, selection of junior doctors to oversee essential facilities like CCTV, on-call rooms and bathrooms. >

‘Nothing was given in writing, told orally’

Doctors further wrote in the letter "In this last meeting with the Chief Secretary, we did not learn anything new which he had not already announced publicly and we were given a verbal reply to our demands. We reserve our full right to formally know about the steps being taken by the state."

The doctors also claimed that they had demanded the first status report along with the safety audit report within seven days, but they had not received it even 23 days after their last meeting with the government. He said, "Therefore, we request you to immediately provide us with the status report of the work done as well as the report of the security audit conducted."
