The court of Additional Sessions Judge Ravi Kumar Diwakar has sentenced Alam of Lodhi Tola, who forced a seventh standard girl student to commit suicide, to ten years of imprisonment. Also, the judge has made a harsh comment on policing and has written that if the police had done proper patrolling in the places like school, park, market etc. where girls go, then such an incident would not have happened.
Shabnur (14), daughter of Asif, a resident of the old city of Baradari, committed suicide by hanging herself on 27 September 2020. Asif alleged that neighbour Alam used to pressure Shabnur to marry him. He used to harass her while going to and coming from school. After investigating in this regard, Baradari police had started investigation by registering a case under section 306 of abetment to suicide on 18 October 2020. In this case, Alam’s lawyer had called the allegations false, saying that there was a delay of 21 days in filing the case.
District Government Advocate Digambar Singh Patel said that there is sufficient evidence against Alam. After hearing both the parties, the court found Alam guilty and sentenced him to ten years imprisonment. He also imposed a fine of one lakh rupees.
The student’s father Asif told the court that Alam used to threaten the student that she should marry him or else he would kill her father. He went to Alam’s house and complained to his parents. Then the family members took it lightly and said that they would make Alam understand, but Alam did not listen. He kept harassing the student. After this, due to fear, the student stopped going to school.
