Thailand New PM: Thailand’s parliament has elected Paytongtarn Shinawatra as the Prime Minister. Shinawatra is the daughter of former Thai leader and billionaire Thaksin. 37-year-old Paytongtarn has become the youngest Prime Minister in the history of Thailand. She is the second woman in the country to reach this position. Paytongtarn’s appointment was made on Friday (16 August) after the approval of Thai MPs.

According to Al Jazeera’s report, Thailand’s new Prime Minister Paytongtarn Shinawatra has replaced Sritha Thavisin, who was removed from the post of Prime Minister by a Constitutional Court decision on Wednesday (14 August). Paytongtarn Shinawatra has been elected to the post of Prime Minister just two days after the dismissal of former Prime Minister Sritha Thavisin by the Constitutional Court.

Thailand’s new Prime Minister Patongtarn Shinawatra is the number 1 shareholder of SC Asset Corporation. Apart from this, Patongtarn is the director of Thaicom Foundation and is the owner of 21 companies, whose value is approximately 68 billion baht. That is, 16 billion rupees.

Patongtarn Shinawatra became the second woman PM of Thailand after Auntie

She is the youngest daughter of billionaire industrialist Thaksin Shinawatra. She has become the second female Prime Minister of Thailand after her father and her aunt. At the same time, she is the third member of the family to become the Prime Minister of the country. However, both Payetongtarn Shinawatra and former Prime Minister Sritha Tavisin belong to the Pheu Thai Party. Shinawatra was second in the 2023 elections.

310 votes were cast in favour of Payetongtarn Shinawatra in Parliament

The ruling coalition party elected Payetongtarn Shinawatra as the Prime Minister in a meeting on Thursday (August 15) night after 310 votes were cast in his favour in the parliament while 145 members voted against him. 27 MPs did not participate in the voting.

Know who is Payetongtarn Shinawatra?

Payetongtarn Shinawatra was born in Bangkok in 1986. She is the youngest daughter of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Payetongtarn Shinawatra graduated with a degree in political science and sociology from the capital’s elite Chulalongkorn University. Shinawatra has done a course in hotel management from Surrey University in the UK. However, now she is going to become the youngest Prime Minister of Thailand at the age of 37.

She gave birth to a child 2 weeks before voting

Before entering politics three years ago, Payetongtarn Shinawatra helped run the hotel branch of the family’s traditional business. Apart from this, Payetongtarn has never held an elected position. However, she was one of Pheu Thai’s prime ministerial candidates in the 2023 elections. Payetongtarn Shinawatra was seen campaigning across Thailand until the end of her pregnancy. But, she gave birth to a child just two weeks before the voting day.
