Actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) on Sunday (November 3, 2024) passed a resolution against ‘One Nation, One Election’, Waqf Amendment Bill and National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Giving this information, the report of news agency ANI further said that in the TVK meeting, a resolution was passed criticizing the MK Stalin-led Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government in Tamil Nadu, alleging that the current regime was Under this, the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu has deteriorated.

According to the report of news agency ‘IANS’, TVK sources said that Vijay held personal discussions with senior party leaders including close confidant and party general secretary Bussi Anand (who is a former Puducherry MLA). Vijay’s yatra is expected to start from Coimbatore on December 2 and end with a big public meeting in Tirunelveli on December 27. His aim during the visit is to connect with people across Tamil Nadu, share the agenda and gather public opinion.

Discussion regarding Tamilar Katchi (NTK) leader Seeman

The meeting also reportedly discussed strategies to counter political rival Nam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) leader Seeman, who had criticized Vijay. At a rally in Vikkaravandi last week, Seeman described the new party’s ideology as a mix of Dravidian and Tamil nationalism and said, “This is very wrong. You either stand on that side or this side. There is a risk of being crushed if you stand in the middle. “Those who are truly committed to Tamil nationalism often have to face personal sacrifice, even to the family.” Seeman had accused Vijay of making political appearances. He has earlier also condemned Dravidism as being contrary to Tamil nationalism, language and culture.

Targeted at BJP and DMK

More than three lakh people participated in Vijay’s rally in Vikkaravandi, which is being seen as a major political development in Tamil Nadu politics. During the rally, Vijay criticized both the ruling DMK and BJP in the state and described BJP as ideological opponent and DMK as political opponent. On the one hand, he accused the DMK of being a family-centric party that exploits the “Dravidian” identity for personal gain, while condemning the divisive politics of the BJP.

Called Vijay’s party as BJP’s C team

In response, DMK leader and state Law Minister S. Raghupathi termed Vijay and TVK as the “C team” of BJP. BJP’s Tamil Nadu spokesperson A.N.S. Prasad suggested that Vijay should give priority to the welfare of the people instead of inciting political sentiments. He also encouraged Vijay to accept the support he has received from various political factions, including the BJP, as he begins his political journey.

When did Vijay’s political identity increase?

Vijay’s political profile has been on the rise ever since his fan club ‘All India Thalapathy Vijay Makkal Iyakkam’ won 115 out of 169 seats in the 2021 Tamil Nadu local body elections. In contrast, Kamal Haasan’s Makkal Needhi Maiam and Seeman’s NTK party did not get any seats. This success has further strengthened Vijay’s growing influence in the political scene of Tamil Nadu.
