Sigiriya Rock Fortress: Sigiriya is a rock fort of the 5th century AD in Sri Lanka. Which is called ‘Lion Fort’ and the rock is called ‘Lion Rock’. Also known as. Sigiriya is a steep rock, which is 1144 feet above sea level and 600 feet above the surrounding plain. This fort is built on top of this rock, to reach it people have to climb 1258 stairs. This fort was once grand, but now only its ruins remain, which people are surprised to see.

People are seen climbing the stairs to reach the top of the rock and the ruins of the fort. At the entrance of the stairs to reach the fort, two paws of a lion have been cut out of the rock, which is known as ‘Lion Gate’. Who built this fort?
According to the report of sigiriyafortress.com, Sigiriya Fort was built by King Kashyap I. He ruled from 477-495 AD Ruled the Sinhalese Dynasty. This grand fort was the capital of the Sinhalese Empire until Kashyap was defeated in 495 AD. Even today people can see the ruins of the fort, gardens, moats, mirror wall and frescoes in this fort. These frescoes are of nymphs, divine singers and dancers.
The king’s life was full of controversies
Traveltalktours.com reports that the life and rule of King Kashyap was full of controversies. In fact, the king was born to his father’s non-royal mistress. Hence Kashyap had no right on the throne. As a result, he rebelled against his father King Dhatusena, was imprisoned and killed. The body was then buried within a wall and Kashyapa took the throne, despite his brother being the rightful heir.
