The building once used to clean dirty water, today has become a big tourist place, know how the miracle happened

Whenever a building becomes famous in the world, it is either because of the workmanship done in it, or because of its historical importance. But a building in Abbey Wood, South East London, England is famous for some other reason. This building was once used to drain out the dirty water of the city of London. Today there is a beautiful church here, which people are coming from far and wide to see. People are not seeing this building because of its historical importance. They are showing more interest in knowing how this discarded building became so beautiful. This is also an interesting story in itself.

This Victorian era building was once used as a pump house to pump out London’s sewage and was built in 1865. In this year 1858, a dangerous stench spread everywhere in the city of London. This is called grade stink. The MPs at that time had approved a plan to improve the city’s sewer system.

In this plan, an 83-mile long sewer line was approved in which it was decided to build three large pumping stations, which also included Crossness Pumping Station. It was designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette and came to be known as the Cathedral of Sewage.

This station continued to function for a hundred years, after which it was closed in 1950. After this, this building was left like this and its parts kept rusting, but later some people came together and took the initiative to renovate it. In 1987, a charity called the Crossness Engine Trust was formed, which received a donation of £2.7 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Improvement work continued for a long time and finally it was opened to the public in 2016 and today this building houses the largest four pumping engines with a 52 tonne fly wheel and a 47 tonne beam. A part of this building has been kept as old so that people can know how this building looked in old times. While one part has been made like a museum. Since then it has become a major center of tourist attraction. Which is one of the most famous abandoned old buildings in the UK.
