If a country is planning to bomb an island, what could be the reason for it? You would think that it might be a plan to attack another country! But it is not so. You will be surprised to know that this is happening for the environment. Yes. South Africa is preparing to bomb its own island and the purpose is to eliminate rats which will help in saving the environment because thousands of albatross birds that are being killed can be saved.

The South African country of Marion is a remote island about 2,000 kilometers southeast of Cape Town. The reason for the bombing plan there is simply that the seabirds there, especially the albatross, are falling prey to rats. The country has launched the world’s most important bird conservation effort, the Mouse-Free Marion Project.

As part of the project, helicopters will be deployed to spread, or bomb, 600 tonnes of pellets containing rat poison chemical across the island. The project has not yet received funding, but a quarter of the required amount, i.e. Rs 2 billion, 43 crore 37 lakh 64 thousand, has been raised.

Not only this, the timing of the plan has also been fixed. The intention is to attack the rats in the winter of 2027, when they are most hungry and the birds that breed in summer are gone. But this campaign will be successful only when every inch of the 25 kilometer long and 17 kilometer wide island is covered.

“We have to get rid of every last rat,” said conservationist Mark Anderson at a meeting of BirdLife South Africa. “If there are any males and females left, they can breed and eventually get back to where we are now.” Marion Island is a nesting ground for many seabirds, including albatrosses. But they are now under threat because swarms of rats are attacking them and eating their eggs.

According to the Mouse-Free Marion Project, 19 of the 29 species of seabirds on the island are threatened with local extinction. “We’re losing hundreds of thousands of seabirds every year because of mice,” Anderson said.
