Arulmigu Dandayudhapani Temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan or Kartikeya, the son of Lord Shiva. This is considered to be his most famous and largest temple. Let us tell you that the history of this temple of Murugan Swami situated in Shivagiri mountain of Palani, Dindigul is very old. But the present temple was built by the Chera kings. The description of this temple is found in the Puranas and Tamil literature. ‘Gyanphalam’ That is, the fruit of knowledge was given as a gift. At that time Lord Shiva had decided to give it to either of his two sons Lord Ganesha and Kartikeya Swami. For this, a condition was placed before both of them that whoever would circumambulate the entire world quickly would get this reward. After this, Karthikeya Swami went out to circumambulate the entire world riding on his vehicle peacock. But Lord Ganesha circled his parents and said that for him his parents are like the world. Lord Shiva was pleased and gave that knowledge to Lord Ganesha. When Kartikeya Swami returned after parikrama, he became angry that his parikrama had gone in vain. After this, Kartikeya Swami left Mount Kailash and started living on Shivagiri Mountain of Palani. Let us tell you that Brahmachari Murugan Swami is seated here in child form. 

 Construction of the temple

This temple was constructed in the 5th-6th century. It was built by Cheraman Perumal, the ruler of the Chera dynasty. It is believed that when Perumal traveled to Palani, Karthikeya or Murugan Swami appeared in his dreams. He had told the king about the location of his idol on Shivagiri mountain of Palani. King Perumal indeed found the idol of Karthikeya Swamy at that place, after which Perumal built a temple at that place. After this, the rulers of Chola and Pandya dynasty built huge pavilions and gopurams of the temple during the 8th to 13th century.

However, Ayurveda also describes the process of making medicines by mixing these poisonous substances in a certain proportion. The nearest airport to Palani is Coimbatore. There is an international airport, which is located at a distance of about 100 kilometers from the temple. Apart from this, Madurai airport is also located at a distance of about 125 km from Palani. Palani is a railway station, which is situated on the Coimbatore-Rameshwaram railway line. Apart from this, it is easy to reach Palani by road also, because Tamil Nadu State Transport buses run directly to Palani from many big cities.
