Five day Deepawali festival of Deepawali village
The festival of Sankranti is celebrated with great pomp in Northern Andhra Pradesh. But in the same North Andhra, people of ‘Deepavali’ village of Srikakulam district celebrate the festival of Deepavali for five days. The people of this village told Local 18 that they celebrate Diwali festival only after worshiping their ancestors.
Story of naming the village
In ancient times, a king used to rule in Srikakulam, who used to pass by this village to have darshan of Shri Kurmanath ji. One day when the king had darshan of Shri Kurmanath ji and while returning he lost consciousness. Seeing this, the people of the village went to the king with lamps and served him by giving him water. When the king regained consciousness, he asked the name of the village. The villagers told that our village has no name. On this the king said, “You served me with the light of lamps, hence I name this village ‘Deepawali’.” Since then this village came to be known as ‘Deepawali’.
Special worship of ancestors and Sankranti like atmosphere
On the day of Sankranti, people pay obeisance to their elders and wear new clothes. But in this Diwali village of Srikakulam district, people of ‘Sondi’ caste wake up in the morning on the day of Diwali and perform Sthanadhikhar puja and ancestral rituals.
Blessings of ancestors and welcome of new son-in-law
Here, people of Sondi community perform Pitru Puja and wear new clothes to get the blessings of their ancestors on the day of Diwali. On the occasion of Sankranti, the new son-in-law is also welcomed, but in this Diwali village, like Sankranti, the new son-in-law is also welcomed on Diwali.
