The pain will be such that you will remember it for months… This is the most dangerous plant, even if you touch it by mistake, you will be left groaning.

Well, there is no dearth of dangerous plants in the world. But Gympie-Gympie is a different kind of plant. The name may sound good, its scientific name is Dendrocnide moroides. With its soft and hairy heart-shaped leaves, it is considered to be Australia’s most poisonous plant. The plant’s withered appearance is due to it being covered with thousands of tiny hair-like stings, which contain a venom so powerful that victims remain in pain for weeks.

Dendrocnide is derived from the Ancient Greek words dendron, meaning “tree”, and nide, meaning “stitching needle.” Botanist Marina Hurley, who studied the plant for three years in the rainforests of Queensland, described its sting as “being burned by hot acid and an electric shock at the same time”. Despite wearing protective gear such as a particle mask and welding gloves, Hurley suffered several stings during his study. He once needed to be admitted to the hospital.

Dendrocnide moroides grows in rainforests in eastern Australia from the Cape York Peninsula to northern New South Wales. It is one of six stinging tree species found in Australia. But the entire Gympie-Gympie plant is covered with small needle-like hairs. Similar to hypodermic needles, these hairs are sharply sharpened and hollow and are designed to break off near the tip so that they can inject venom into the victim’s tissue.

The needles are so small that they are difficult to remove from the skin, but until this is done, the needles continue to release toxins into the body, causing irritation whenever the affected areas are touched or exposed to water, or temperature. If we come in contact with the changes, it causes pain. Researchers have said that the hairs on dry leaves can also be filled with poison.

What’s worse is that the plant constantly sheds its needles like a cat sheds its hair. The needles remain suspended in the air around the plant, where an unsuspecting victim can inhale them, causing respiratory complications.
