Scientists have discovered a 39 million year old forest which is said to be the oldest in the world. The fossils of this forest of the Devonian period are considered a huge treasure. This discovery has broken the record of an old forest found near New York. These are also said to be the oldest plant fossils ever discovered in Britain. Scientists say that there is hope of finding information about the animals of that period in the fossils of this forest with palm tree-like trees.
This discovery has been made by scientists from Cambridge University and Cardiff University in the areas of Devon and Somerset, about which it is not expected that anything big will be found here. This unique discovery has been made under the sandstone peaks near a holiday resort.
On this surprising discovery, Neil Davis, the lead author of the study and Professor of Cambridge University, says that people think that a lot has been seen of the rocks of Britain. But this new discovery shows that there is still a lot to be discovered.

In this study, researchers studied the rocks of the Hangman Sandstone Formation, which is a 1.4 kilometer long Devonian period rocks which are between 41.9 and 38.5 million years old. This is the same period when life started expanding on Earth. Till now it was believed that there were no fossils of any kind of plants till the southern bank of the Bristol Canal.
But researchers discovered fossils of trunks and branches of ancient forest trees here. The special thing about these trees is that they are not like the trees and plants in today’s forests. These trees named Kalamophyton were like today’s palm trees. These were thin and hollow from inside and contained hundreds of twigs. The twigs here show that this forest must have been home to early animals. During this period, a lot had changed with life on Earth.
