Chhatarpur: Barigarh is a historical place in Chhatarpur, Madhya Pradesh. Here is a fort from the era of Chandela kings. There is such a tunnel in this fort, seeing which people are still amazed. Barigarh Fort, one of the 8 major forts of Chandelas, is also very beautiful. Barigarh means a fort which has gardens all around it. Here Bari means wall.

Information about the history of Barigarh Fort is available in the book ‘Forts of Bundelkhand’ by well-known author Dr. Kashi Prasad Tripathi. According to the book, this fort of Barigarh was built by Mahoba Chandela ruler Vijay Varman in 1040 AD. This fort is also known as Bari Durg or Durg Vijay Fort. The commanders of Chandela kings, Alha-Udal, lived in this fort. Barigarh was earlier known as Jujhar Nagar.

Entry through elephant gate
While entering this fort, the first thing to be found is the Elephant Gate. Experts say that elephants and horses used to enter the fort through this gate. Elephants and horses were tied inside this fort. The iron pegs used to tie them are still made here. However, during the rainy season, due to the presence of lush green trees, those pegs are no longer visible.

There is a secret tunnel here
To the left and right of the elephant gate, there are rooms made only of granite stones. In the left room, there is a way into a secret tunnel, which is now closed. There are stairs also in this room, with the help of which one can go up. On reaching here, the wall around the fort is visible and from here the granite wall above the secret tunnel is also visible.

The secret of high and tall walls security
A granite wall about 12 km long and more than 20 feet high has been built on top of the mountain. To protect against invaders, this fort was made so secure that no one could penetrate this fort even in the darkness of night. The secret tunnel here makes this fort the safest. The special thing about this tunnel was that during the attack, one could safely reach Mahoba with the help of the secret tunnel. Experts say that the route of this secret tunnel goes to Mahoba, 20 km from here.
