The VC’s chair has been lying vacant in Jamia for months, the faculty wrote a letter to the PM and made this big demand


The post of regular Vice Chancellor in Jamia Millia Islamia has been lying vacant for more than six months. Regarding which the faculty has now written a letter to the PM and requested for immediate appointment to this post. In the past, the acting Vice Chancellors had to face internal challenges. In such a situation, now the institute needs a permanent Vice Chancellor.

In fact, the post of regular Vice Chancellor is vacant in Jamia Millia Islamia for the last six months, due to which concern is increasing among the faculty members. They believe that this vacant post is having a negative impact on the institute. The professors of the university have recently written a letter to PM Modi urging him to pay attention to this issue. Let us tell you that the tenure of the last regular Vice Chancellor ended on 12 November 2023.  

Had to face challenges

According to reports, there has been a dispute over the appointment of the Vice Chancellor in the university. Two acting Vice Chancellors have been appointed, but both appointments have faced internal challenges. In May, the Delhi High Court quashed the appointment of Professor Iqbal Hussain as Acting Vice Chancellor. The court said that his appointment was not in accordance with the legislation. The court requested the President of India to ensure the appointment of a regular Vice Chancellor in the interim.

Notification not issued

According to faculty members, the absence of a regular Vice Chancellor has created several obstacles to the overall capacity of the university. These challenges include promotions, appointments and inability to take important policy decisions. Screening of candidates for the post of Vice Chancellor was done in February 2024. After this process, a list of potential candidates has been prepared. Notification for appointment has not been issued yet. It has been requested to take note of the matter and take necessary action.
