Voting continues for the presidential election in Indonesia. In a country with more than 20 crore voters, voting is taking place extensively on issues of human rights and basic needs. This is the biggest election held in a single day in any country. Voting has been held in different countries with more voters than this, but then the elections were held in several phases and till now such a large number of votes have never been held in a single day.
Indonesian President Joko Widodo has completed the maximum limit of his tenure. In such a situation, political changes are certain to take place in the country. On this important occasion, the people of Indonesia are electing their new President and Vice President as well as electing MPs and local representatives. Out of 27 crore people of Indonesia, the names of more than 20 crore are in the voter list. Although voting is not mandatory for everyone, today has been kept as a holiday in the country. Because of this, there is every possibility of heavy voting. 81 percent voters had voted in the elections held in 2019.
At present there are 49.91 percent male and 50.09 percent female voters here. People involved in Indonesia’s police and army cannot vote. To become President, any candidate must get more than 50 percent votes overall and at least 20 percent votes in each province. There are a total of 18 political parties, which are contesting for 575 seats. Current President Joko Widodo has completed his two terms. Now he cannot become President for the third time. In such a situation, it is certain that there will be a change of President in this country after a decade. Candidates from three parties are in the race for this post. This includes a former military general, former administrative officer and self-proclaimed public leader.
The elections are being organized by 70 lakh people, which include election officials and independent workers. The preliminary results of the elections are expected to be known by the evening of 14 February. However, it may take 35 days for the official results to come. If the margin of victory or defeat is small, there is bound to be a delay in the results.
