Manish Jain, Professor of Zoology Department of Girls Degree College, Sagar, said that stag beetles are endangered species of insects. According to media reports, their price is being said to be up to Rs 75 lakh. Depending on the beetle species, they can be green, dark brown, grey, reddish brown or even black. They do have a scary appearance but they are not harmful to humans and other animals.
A family of 1200 species of beetles
Stag beetles are a family of about 1200 species of beetles in the Lycaenidae family. A well-known species in most parts of Europe is Lucanus cervus (reddish black in colour). Its jaws are long and resemble the horns of a deer. In English, deer is called stag. Hence, due to its characteristic, the name of this beetle is popular as stag beetle.
He told that in European countries this is considered as luck and people wear garlands of this dead insect in the streets. In Lucania, Italy, this insect is used as an amulet. It is considered a symbol of good luck. The weight of these insects is between 2-6 grams. Their average lifespan is 3-7 years. While male insects are 35-75 mm long, if we talk about female insects, they are 30-50 mm long.
