If you were asked how old the world’s oldest egg could be, what would you say? But the condition is that the egg should be completely safe from outside as well as inside. Would you believe that such an egg could be 1700 years old? But one such egg has been found in the excavation of an archaeological site in England, which after scanning has been found to be completely safe. The ability of eggs to remain safe for so long is surprising in itself.
The liquid yellow and white part of this egg still remains inside this Roman era egg, found in Berryfield, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, England. After investigating it, it was found that this egg is 1700 years old. This egg, about four cm wide, was found in a pit filled with water.
It is believed that due to this reason this egg remained safe for so many centuries. When experts scanned it, they came to know that the egg was completely safe from inside. DGB Conservation archaeologist Dana Gusburn Brown says that there is also an air bubble inside this egg.
Usually, the internal parts of very old eggs are not preserved. (Symbolic photo: Wikimedia Commons)
It was only through this bubble that they could come to know that there was liquid inside. When he noticed that when the egg was shaken, the bubble also moved. Four such eggs were found at this place, but three of them were broken during excavation. Such eggs have been found before at ancient Roman sites, but a complete egg like this has never been found.
Goodburn Brown says that in this way the organic matter inside the egg is also not able to survive for such a long time unless the conditions are different and due to this oxygen is not reaching them. It is believed that someone had left the eggs in a basket as a good omen. In Roman society, the egg was seen as a sign of fertility and regeneration. ,
