Neither of his parents was able to succeed in the industry and the family was also not very good. His father lost everything due to unsuccessful home production. After which the family moved from their Carter Road bungalow to Virar, where Govinda was born. The actor had told in an old interview that while growing up, he saw that his mother hardly had money to buy food, and she had to borrow ration from the grocery store to survive.

In the 1980s, Govinda completed his graduation in commerce. After this, he started looking for jobs but did not get success. Govinda had told that he did not get a job due to poor English.
