These eye banks are going to be locked! This work will have to be done to save the license

An alert has been issued for Indian banks. In which it has been said that the license of those eye banks which are not able to deposit at least 100 corneas in a year will be cancelled. The National Organ and Tissues Transplant Organization (NOTTO) has advised state officials to prepare an audit of the data and performance of each eye bank. So that on this basis their license will be extended or cancelled.  Eye banks are responsible for collecting, processing, preserving and distributing corneal tissues for transplant.

They should also ensure the safe transportation of the tissue to the keratoplasty centre. Eye banks must meet several standards. To have a public response system for eye donation queries. Organizing public awareness programs. Having adequate space, equipment and supplies. To have competency assessment program for technical staff. Establishing documented procedures for maintaining equipment.

Warning to bankers

The National Organ and Tissues Transplant Organization (NOTTO) has written to all states and Union Territories (UTs) warning eye banks not improving eye donation activities that they may lose their business if they fail to meet the target of cornea collection. Cancel registration. As per the rules of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994, every eye bank affiliated with the state authorities has to collect at least 500 corneas in five years. Which is roughly equivalent to at least 50 eyes and 100 corneas every year. According to the letter signed by Dr Anil Kumar, Director of NOTTO, the authority may consider issuing a warning notice to the eye bank to improve its eye donation activities. Otherwise their renewal for the next term cannot be considered.

NOTTO tightened its grip on I-bankers

This step has been taken at a time when NOTTO is working in all corneal transplant centers and tissue banks, including eye banks. Is considering linking it to the National Registry of Patients database created by itself. The transplant regulatory body accepted donations from all such registered centers from states and union territories (UTs).

Also asked to share the number of transplants collected and done. These steps have been taken following a meeting chaired by Director General of Health Services (DGHS) Atul Goel in May this year on issues related to cornea donation, retrieval and distribution.
