This city of Chhatarpur is a real maze, Barigarh-Jujhar Nagar has an interesting story

Chhatarpur: Barigarh-Jujhar Nagar situated in Chhatarpur district is such a unique city which always remains in discussion due to its two names. Every area here has become synonymous with confusion, where the settlement comes under Barigarh, while the market and the police station are known as Jujhar Nagar. The reason for this confusion lies in its historical and administrative aspects, which require an interesting journey to understand.

Jujhar Singh and Alha-Udal Fort
The naming journey of Barigarh and Jujhar Nagar is centuries old. According to local resident Rahmat Ali, the history of the two names of this area is linked to the times of kings. Raja Jujhar Singh of Tikamgarh’s borders extended up to Barigarh, and the city was called “Jujhar Nagar” after him. At the same time, there is a historical fort of Alha-Udal within the city, which is called Barigarh. “Bari” means “wall”, and because of the fort surrounded by this wall, this area is called Barigarh.

There is special mention of Barigarh Fort in the book Fort of Bundelkhand by well-known writer Dr. Kashi Prasad Tripathi. The settlement inside this fort is called Barigarh, while the area outside it is known as Jujhar Nagar. Moreover, before independence, Barigarh was a tehsil of Charkhari princely state, which gives it a historical and cultural importance.

Administrative situation and cause of confusion
Confusion arises in this area because the administrative institutions here are known by different names. For example, the Nagar Panchayat and most of the public services such as hospitals and schools are running under the name Barigarh. But the police station is in the name of Jujhar Nagar, due to which new people coming here often get confused.

Till 1980, Barigarh was known as a Gram Panchayat, but in view of the development of this area, Barigarh and Jujhar Nagar were merged into one Nagar Panchayat. Although this Nagar Panchayat is now officially known as Barigarh, the complexities associated with the naming of areas within and outside this area have not been completely eliminated.

Current identity and local thinking
Now that this city has become a Nagar Panchayat, most of the people know it by the name of Barigarh. While many public services are located towards Barigarh, the boundaries of Jujhar Nagar are outside Barigarh. Local residents consider Barigarh as a cultural identity, while the name of Jujhar Nagar is associated with the history of Raja Jujhar Singh of Tikamgarh.

Why is there an effect of two names?
The names of Barigarh and Jujhar Nagar impact not only the local administrative system but also the thinking of the people and the cultural identity of the city. The use of the word “Bari” associated with the historical fort of Barigarh gives it a special place in the hearts of the people of this city. At the same time, the memories of monarchy associated with the name of Jujhar Nagar give a distinct identity to this place.
