Kolkata Medical College was established on 28 January 1835. At that time India was under British rule and the British realized that modern medical education was needed in Indian society. The biggest contribution behind the establishment of this college was the then Governor General Lord William Bentinck, who implemented many reforms in India.

But the British rule introduced modern European medical system into Indian medical education. Kolkata Medical College was the first such institution in India, where medical education was imparted in the European system. Subjects like anatomy, surgery, and physiology were taught here for the first time. Initially, only male students were admitted and all the courses were in English.
