Rani Ki Sarai Village: There is a village located about 15 kilometers away from the city, whose name is ‘Rani Ki Sarai.’ The story behind this name is related to the naming of Azamgarh and the king who settled it. During the reign of Jahangir, Mehnagar tehsil of Azamgarh district was the princely state of Raja Abhimanyu Singh. Abhimanyu Singh had made his nephew Harivansh Singh the heir of his kingdom.

The history teacher of Shibli College, Azamgarh told that Raja Harivansh Singh had accepted Islam by marrying a Muslim girl. But his first wife Jyoti Singh did not like this at all. She did not compromise with her self-respect and got angry and left the estate with her children.

The place where the queen made her new residence is today known as ‘Rani Ki Sarai’. After some time, Rani’s son Vikramjit Singh also accepted Islam. Vikramjit Singh had two sons – Azam Shah and Azmat Shah. Azam Shah later established the city of Azamgarh and the state of Azamgarh still exists in the name of Azmat Shah.

Who was Abhimanyu Singh?
Abhimanyu Singh was a brave soldier during the reign of Jahangir. At that time, there was a period of rebellion going on in the state of Jaunpur, due to which Jahangir’s problems were increasing. In such a situation, Abhimanyu Singh took the responsibility of ending the rebellion of Jaunpur. He ended the rebellion in Jaunpur thrice. Pleased with his exploits, Jahangir made him the master of 1500 horsemen, 92 thousand rupees and 22 bandas.
