What if something is added to one of your hands which allows you to do the work of two hands with just one hand. Yes, a new research has made this possible. Scientists at Cambridge University have created a robotic artificial limb which the person wearing it can do such tasks which usually require two hands. It is being called the third thumb, this extra thumb is attached to the edge of the right hand. It allows the user to open cold drink bottles, peel bananas and thread a needle with just one hand.
It also allows for more efficient tasks, such as parents cooking while holding a baby. The third toe is worn on the wearer’s actual palm opposite the thumb and is controlled by pressure sensors placed under the big toes. The toe sensors are wirelessly connected to the thumbs. They control a variety of activities by responding to small changes in pressure.
The study from the University of Cambridge showed that volunteers quickly adapted to having an extra finger, which scientists say could “extend our motor abilities beyond current biological limits”.

Researchers at the university’s MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit believe participants were tasked with performing small tasks that required fine motor skills, such as placing pegs into baskets and moving objects, reports MailOnline.
The study found that 98% of the volunteers were able to move the thumb well within the first minute of use. Study author Lucy Dowdle says, “Wearable technologies are already being used in our daily lives and now we are seeing a growing number of particularly improved technologies.” In the future, it can make everyday life easier for people with one hand.
