There is one shopping mall in the world which had achieved the title of the world’s largest shopping mall, but Randall Park Mall in Ohio, USA was destroyed after only 33 years. This mall worth about Rs 14 billion 96 crore 27 lakh has been lying vacant for about 15 years. Even the image of being the world’s largest exporter could not help it, as the stigma of crimes overshadowed it.
Randall Park Mall was spread over 2.2 million square feet. Located just outside of Cleveland, Ohio, the village of North Randall was known primarily for its race track before the construction of the Randall Park Mall on the site of the former Randall Park Race Track. The shopping center featured over 200 shops, five major department stores (Sears, Horne’s, Higbee’s, May Company and JCPenney), a three-screen cinema, and parking for 9,000 vehicles.
During its first year its sales were more than Rs 11 billion 92 crore 82 lakh. But over an extended period of 33 years, various economic factors brought it to its knees. The mall kept changing hands between owners for many years, finally it was sold for only Rs 62 crore, 78 lakh.

After more than ten years of decline, the mall closed its doors on March 12, 2009. In 2015, the former Dillard’s store and the interior of the mall were torn down to make room for an industrial park. After all operations were shut down in 2017, the rest of the tenants also faced the same fate.

Its last owners tried to revive the shopping center by investing crores of rupees, but to no avail. By the time Paul Robinson, a patron of the shopping center’s Magic Johnson Cinema, shot and killed another man and then tried to kill himself in 1998, the Randall Park Mall’s reputation was already in tatters. There are many such stories in the history of the mall whose crimes continuously tarnished its image and ultimately led to its demise.
