Thousands of cases are still pending in the Supreme Court how many cases have increased year after year

The Supreme Court of the country was formed with the objective of providing justice in the country and protecting the Constitution. But, in the last few decades, the number of pending cases in the Supreme Court has been increasing continuously, due to which the process of getting justice is now slowing down. Let us tell you today how many cases are pending in the Supreme Court and how many cases each judge has.

Current Scenario of Pending Cases in Supreme Court

By the end of 2023, there were more than 70,000 cases pending in the Supreme Court of India. But by January 2024, this number increased to 80,221. According to the report of the Supreme Court Observer, more than 80000 cases were pending in the Supreme Court in January 2024. Talking about January 2024 alone, 1996 cases were registered in the Supreme Court in this month. Whereas, 2420 cases were also resolved by the Supreme Court in the same month.

However, even after this, when you look at the annual figures, it seems worrying. Actually, such pending cases raise questions on the efficiency of the justice system. Let us tell you, most of these pending cases are civil and criminal cases, which have been pending for years. Apart from this, constitutional issues, PILs and miscellaneous appeals are also included in the pending list.

How many cases are increasing year after year

Talking about the number of pending cases increasing in the Supreme Court year after year, while 80,221 cases were pending in January 2024, 78,400 cases were pending in the Supreme Court in January 2023. Whereas, 70,101 cases were pending in the Supreme Court in January 2022. On the other hand, if we talk about the number of judges in the Supreme Court, then at present the number of judges in the Supreme Court is 34. In such a situation, you can imagine how much pressure a judge would have to clear so many cases.
