Review: Another sports drama film? Dare to see? same old story. To become champion. First lose, then learn, then go on winning and come to the final and beat the opponent with his own moves or remember the forgotten tricks again and win. Every sports drama film is like this. It is surprising that something similar happens in a film inspired by true events. Recently a film was released on Netflix – Tulsidas Junior. Why is the name of the film Tulsidas, why not Tulsidas, the answer to this is known either by the killers of Hindi language or by numerologists. The name of this film has not been written in Hindi, only by looking at its English spelling, it has been inferred that it is Tulsi and not Tulsi. The name is messed up, the film is also messed up. At the end of the film, it is revealed that the film’s writer-director (Mridul Mahendra) has written the film after being influenced by the incidents in his personal life, so the remaining hope also ends. Although this is the second film directed by Mridul, the first was Missed Call which was released in 2005 and was sent to the Cannes Film Festival. Mridul Mahendra’s name was Mridul Tulsidas at the time of the first film. The movie can be watched with Tulsidas Jr. family, so watch it in the afternoon on a holiday, don’t expect any master piece.

Rajeev Kapoor has been losing the final of snooker at a club in Kolkata for 5 years because his familiar rival Dalip Tahil makes him drink alcohol during the 15-minute break in the final. Rajeev knows very well that alcohol is his weakness but still he drinks and many times he has to come to the club to pick up his wife or children. Rajeev has two sons. Elder son Goti who is clever and wants to earn money, for which he is ready to do anything like betting, gambling, betting on horses. Midi is the younger son who is sad to see his father lose. To avenge his father’s constant defeats, he reaches a snooker club in an infamous area of Kolkata where former national champion Sanjay Dutt teaches him snooker in his own style. After working hard for a year, overcoming all odds, he participates in a snooker tournament at his father’s club. Defeats his father in the semi-finals and Dalip Tahil in the final. all’s well that ends well.

The story of the film is inspired by true events. From Mridul’s personal life. If you want to make a film on your own life, then there is a lot of manipulation. How can you show yourself bad or weak. You can show your father losing after drinking but you cannot show him falling on the road while walking. Mother’s life becomes hell because of father’s habit of drinking alcohol, they also cannot show it. Elder brother is clever and keeps making schemes to earn money, but who can choose right from wrong. There is a film to show good things, there cannot be a film to hide bad things. The events of Mridul’s life may have happened like this but it is necessary to take ‘Cinematic Liberty’ in the film so that the emotions are taken to their highest level and the audience can be connected to the story. The irony of Tulsidas is that the audience watches it like a film and forgets, because there is little to remember.

Sanjay Dutt seems to have taken a vow that he will continue to speak Tapori language throughout his life. How a former national champion playing in an old snooker club in a corner of Kolkata can speak in such a language is a matter of thought. Sanjay should have remembered Dilip Prabhavalkar’s character of Gandhi in his own film ‘Lage Raho Munna Bhai’. Taking inspiration from the way he teaches Gandhigiri to Sanjay, Sanjay should have played the role of a coach. It should have been nice to see Rajeev Kapoor on screen after a long time, but it didn’t. 32 years of waqfa has passed, he should come on the big screen. The reason for not working will be personal but the stories of his drinking are public. Rajeev played the role of an alcoholic father who is so enslaved to the addiction that he consumes alcohol at the hands of his opponent during a 15-minute break during a match, knowing that he gets intoxicated. After the break, they have to play the remaining match again, last four times also this opponent has won and this time Rajeev wants to defeat him for his son. Despite all these things, Rajiv drinks alcohol. Unfortunately, this film turned out to be Rajeev’s last film as he died of a heart attack last year after the shooting of this film. The role of Tulsidas Junior is played by an actor named Varun Buddhadev. He has played the childhood role of Ram Charan in RRR and in the upcoming film Prithviraj, he is playing the childhood role of Akshay Kumar i.e. Prithviraj. Varun has done a good job, although his hands are tight when it comes to emotes. The best character has been played by Goti i.e. elder brother (Chinmay Chandranshu). Had a little effort been put in writing this character, many memorable moments could have been created in it. Dalip Tahil’s work is fine. In his first film ‘Missed Call’, Mridul took Ankur Vikal as the main character and probably because of the same love, Ankur has also been given a role of two scenes in Tulsidas Junior.

There is nothing in the film that can be remembered, yes the film is neat and clean. There is no vulgarity, no violence, no dancing and singing. There is no dialogue that would make the viewers uncomfortable. It was very nice and easy for Tulsidas not to insult his father even after seeing his father drunk. The film is made for the family, so watch it with children. The film will not become memorable, but yes, while trying to give a neat and clean message, the film also demands an audience.
