This 24-year-old Kwon Dae-hee from South Korea paid around Rs 4 lakh for the surgical procedure to shape his chin like that of K-pop stars. Stephanie Soo of the Rotten Mango podcast reported that after Kwon was declared brain-dead, hospital officials called his brother, Kwon Tae-hoon, to inform him of his death.
In response to a complaint by Kwon’s mother Lee Na Geum, the plastic surgeon offered to hand over CCTV footage of the operation. The footage revealed that the top plastic surgeon whom Kwon had trusted to reconstruct her face left the operating theater about 60 minutes after the procedure. A second doctor, who did not have a plastic surgery license, was then left to complete the operation.
Stephanie told that ghost doctors usually work in plastic surgery. “When the patient is put on the operating table, they start the procedure and go away and a ghost doctor comes in and does most of the work. The chief surgeon remains with the patient for a very short time. When all this is done, the ghost doctor disappears like a ghost that never existed. None of their records are kept.
No one paid attention to Kwon’s deteriorating condition and the bleeding. Whereas the carelessness of everyone from assistant doctors to nurses was clearly visible in the CCTV footage. In 2019, Kwon’s family was awarded more than ₹28 million in damages against the clinic. The surgeon in the case was later sentenced to three years in prison for involuntary manslaughter.
