In a massive crackdown on spam calls and unregistered tele-marketing companies, 2.75 lakh telephone numbers have been disconnected and services of 50 firms have been suspended. This action has been taken under the recent tough stance adopted by telecom regulator TRAI.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had asked telecom companies to blacklist unregistered telemarketing firms and block their associated numbers. In a statement issued on Tuesday, TRAI said that it has seen a significant increase in fake calls. More than 7.9 lakh complaints have been filed against unregistered telemarketing firms in the first half of 2024.
TRAI said this
TRAI said that to curb this, strict instructions were issued to all access providers on August 13, 2024 and they were asked to immediately curb the tele marketing firms without registration.
TRAI said, “Keeping in mind these instructions, telecom companies have taken strict measures against misuse of telecom resources for fraudulent calls. They have blacklisted more than 50 firms and shut down more than 2.75 lakh SIP DIDs/mobile numbers/telecom resources. These steps are expected to reduce fraudulent calls and provide relief to consumers. ” TRAI has urged all stakeholders to contribute to a cleaner and more efficient telecom ecosystem.
Advice given to report cyber crime
TRAI said that in cases like cyber crime and financial fraud, citizens should report on the Chakshu Facility available on the Department of Telecommunication’s Sanchar Sathi platform. Apart from this, information about such suspicious calls should also be given by visiting the cyber crime helpline number 1930 or the official website.
