Railway Minister had given the answer
Some time ago, the country’s Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had gone to Bijnor on a tour, where he had informed that Railways gives more than 55 percent concession to its passengers on every ticket. For example, when you book a train ticket, it is written on it that IR recovers only 57% of cost on an average.
That means Railways is taking only 57 percent of the expenses incurred on your journey. This means that the Railways pays 45 to 55 percent of the expenses on your train journey. According to this, if your train ticket is worth Rs 1000, then 45 to 55 percent of it is being given by the Railways.
How does the railway make money?
Now it is natural to raise the question that if the Railways is spending half the money on your ticket, then from where does the Railways earn money. Let us tell you, apart from tickets, Railways provides many other types of services. This also includes carrying goods, advertisements on the platform and rent charged for setting up a shop at the station. Apart from this, when a train or station is booked for a film, the Railways also earns money from it. You will be surprised to know that among all these, Railways earns the most from freight transportation.
The income from Railways is mentioned in the report of the Railway Ministry for the financial year 2022-23. According to this, Railways collected revenue of Rs 2.40 lakh crore in the financial year 2022-23. This is 25 percent i.e. about Rs 49 thousand crore more than last year. As we mentioned above, Indian Railways earned the maximum amount of Rs 1.62 lakh crore from freight transportation. After this, the highest income has come from passenger services.
