India’s first vertical lift sea bridge built to connect Tamil Nadu to Rameshwaram is ready. Recently, a train trial was conducted on this bridge which was completely successful. During the trial, the train passed over the bridge at a speed of 121 kilometers per hour. Let us tell you, this bridge, which is about 2.2 km long, is a unique bridge in India in itself.
How does the lifting mechanism of this bridge work
The specialty of this vertical lift bridge is its lifting system, which is used to raise or lower the bridge deck. To run this system, hydraulic cylinder, electric motor or gear system is usually used. Actually, hydraulic pumps and cylinders are used to raise or lower the bridge deck.
When there is a need to lift the bridge, the hydraulic pump sends water or oil to the cylinder. With the help of which the cylinder expands and pulls the deck upwards. Whereas, some vertical lift bridges use gear system and electric motor. In simple language, the motor rotates the gear, which helps in lifting the deck upwards.
Who built this bridge
This bridge Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL) has done the construction work. Talking about the specialty of the new Pamban rail bridge built in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu, this bridge also has a provision for load deflection along with two locos and 11 loaded wagons. This is India’s first vertical lift sea bridge. In simple language, a train will run over this bridge, but as soon as a sea ship comes near it, this bridge will automatically rise and the ship will pass under it. This bridge has been designed in such a way that the biggest ship can easily pass under it.
When was its foundation laid
Let us tell you, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation of this Pamban bridge in November 2019. The work of this bridge was started by RVNL in February 2020. Earlier it was decided that the construction work of this bridge would be completed by December 2021. But due to the Corona epidemic, its deadline was extended. This is the reason why this vertical lift bridge will be completed in the year 2024.
