The results of the Gujarat assembly elections are out. This time the Bharatiya Janata Party has created a new record. In Gujarat, which has 182 assembly seats, 156 BJP candidates won the elections. The Congress suffered the most. The Congress came straight down to 17 from 77 seats. Means Congress had to bear the loss of 60 seats. At the same time, this time only five candidates of the Aam Aadmi Party, which claimed to form the government, could win the elections. The SP candidate won one seat, while the remaining three seats were won by independent candidates.
The Udhna assembly seat in Surat district has been important from the BJP’s point of view as the party had won both the elections held here before this election. Apart from this, the importance of this seat for BJP is also because this seat comes in Navsari Lok Sabha and its MP is Gujarat BJP President CR Patil. Assembly elections were held on this seat for the first time in 2012.
This time, BJP had made Manubhai Patel its candidate here. He defeated Dhansukhbhai Rajput of INC by 69,896 votes. Manubhai got a total of 93,999 votes. Whereas, Congress’s Dhansukhbhai had to be content with just 24,103 votes. Mahendrabhai Ravanbhai Patil of Aam Aadmi Party came third. Mahendrabhai got a total of 21,741 votes. 1,820 voters of Udhana seat pressed the NOTA button.
BJP had won here in 2017
The BJP had won this seat in the 2017 assembly elections. In this election, BJP had given ticket to Vivek Patel in place of sitting MLA Narottambhai Patel. He defeated Satish Bhai Patel of Congress by 42 thousand votes. A total of 13 candidates were in the fray in this election. Except for the candidates of BJP and Congress, the deposits of 11 candidates were forfeited.
Prior to 2017, the BJP had won this seat in the 2012 elections as well. In that election, Narottam Bhai Patel, who contested from the BJP, defeated Dhansukh Bhai Rajput of the Congress.
Migrant voters decide victory or defeat
Due to the industry in the Udhna area, people from North India come here in search of employment. Many migrants have now even got their voter cards made from here. This is the reason why this seat has more migrant people than the local people of Gujarat. It is the migrant voters who decide the fate of political parties here.
For the 2022 elections, the BJP had denied ticket to sitting MLA Vivek Patel on this seat. In his place, BJP made Manubhai Patel its candidate. At the same time, Congress had declared Dhansukhbhai Rajput as its candidate. The seat went to polls in the first phase on December 1. The results came on 8 December.
