UGC Again Urges Institutions To Use Handloom Clothes


Handloom industry is being promoted across the country. The government is working to provide various facilities to the artisans associated with this industry. In this sequence, now the University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked universities to use clothes made from handloom clothes on special occasions like convocation ceremonies. It has also been said by UGC that the action taken in this regard should also be shared through pictures and videos.

The University Grants Commission had issued letters to universities in this regard in the years 2015 and 2019. In which it was said that clothes made from handloom clothes are more comfortable in the climate of India. Besides, it also creates a feeling of pride. UGC Secretary Prof. In the letter shared by Manish R Joshi, it has been said that adopting the suggestion of UGC, many universities have already adopted it in their convocation ceremonies. But some universities have not yet followed this.

The Secretary has said in the letter that other universities should brainstorm on adopting handloom clothes as formal attire. The use of handloom clothes will not only create a sense of pride in being an Indian. Besides this, handloom industry will also get a boost in the country. Due to which many people will also get employment. For the first time on July 15, 2015, UGC had requested universities to switch to handloom fabrics. After this, another letter was sent on 7 June 2019. UGC has asked universities to share the work done in this regard with pictures and videos.
