what is the full form
The name of this exam is University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test. The exam is conducted for UGC, mainly it is a NET exam. NTA i.e. National Testing Agency conducts it for UGC. The exam is held twice a year, usually in the months of June and December. This exam is conducted since 1989-90.
This field is for them
This exam is mainly given by candidates who wish to go into the field of academics. They either do research first and later teach in colleges, universities etc. as Professor, Assistant Professor or Associate Professor. Or they directly pass the exam and get appointed to these posts and also keep doing research.
What is the eligibility
There is no age limit to appear in this exam. Candidates who have done Masters with at least 55 percent marks in the relevant subject can apply. It is conducted in more than 100 subjects and you can apply for Mastery by choosing your subject and passing the exam in it.
There is an age limit for JRF or Junior Research Fellow (31 years) but not for the post of professor. Candidates who get JRF do research and also get some amount every month. Those who get lectureship by passing the exam do not get this facility.

Understand it broadly like this that candidates who pass the exam are eligible to apply for the post of professor in various colleges of the country. What is the paper pattern like?
This exam is conducted in two languages, Hindi and English. Multiple choice questions are asked in it and the duration of the exam is three hours. This is a national level test in which one paper is common for all, the second paper is according to the subject you have chosen.
