UK Elections: A record 28 people of Indian origin have been elected as MPs in the elections held in Britain. The results of the UK elections came on Friday (5 July), in which Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party suffered a crushing defeat. The Labor Party has won this election and has won more than 400 seats. Keir Starmer of the Labor Party has become the new Prime Minister of Britain. Starmer was elected the new leader of the Labor Party in 2020, replacing Jeremy Corbyn.
Out of the 28 Indian-origin MPs who have won in Britain, a record 12 members are from the Sikh community. This includes six women who have been elected to the House of Commons. All the winning Sikh MPs belong to the Labour Party. Among these, there are 9 MPs who have been elected for the first time, while there are two MPs who have been given a chance by the public for the third time. Similarly, a Sikh MP has got a chance to go to the House of Commons for the second time.
Sikh MPs won from these seats
According to the Indian Express report, Sikh MPs Preet Kaur Gill and Tanmanjit Singh Dhesi won for the third time in Birmingham Edgbaston and Slough respectively on the Labor Party ticket. Nadia Whittome won for the second time from Nottingham East. When Whittome was first elected MP in 2019, she was the youngest MP in the House of Commons at the age of 23. Nadia describes herself as a Catholic Sikh.
Kirith Entwistle, also known as Kirith Ahluwalia, became the first woman to be elected MP from Bolton North East. Sonia Kumar has also become the first woman MP from Dudley parliamentary seat. Similarly, Harpreet Kaur Uppal has also become an MP for the first time by winning the Huddersfield parliamentary seat. In terms of Sikh MPs, Canada ranks first, where there are 18 Sikh MPs, while Britain is second with 12 MPs.
These Indian-origin leaders of the Conservative Party also won
Rishi Sunak won his Richmond and Northallerton constituency in Yorkshire. He is among the Indian-origin MPs of the Conservative Party who have won. Conservative Party leader and former Home Minister Suella Braverman and Priti Patel and Sunak’s Goa-origin cabinet colleague Claire Coutinho have also won from their respective seats. Gagan Mohindra has won from West Hertfordshire and Shivani Raja from Leicester East.
