Expansion

Bahujan Samaj Party has suffered a major setback in the Lok Sabha elections. In the last 10 years, its support base has been reduced by half. Not only this, in this election, its votes decreased by more than 21 lakhs on 17 reserved seats of the state, which became the reason for the defeat of the candidates.

There are speculations that these votes will be transferred to the SP-Congress alliance. If we look at the performance of BSP in the last three Lok Sabha elections, it is evident that it has failed to retain its cadre vote bank.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, BSP had got a total of 1,59,14,194 votes, which this time shrunk to just 82,53,489. Half of the party’s vote bank went to the opposition parties election after election. This is the reason why BSP had to face a crushing defeat in the elections.

Bad situation on safe seats

BSP has fared badly on reserved seats. In the 2014 elections, it had received 39,71,139 votes on reserved seats, while in the recent elections it has received only 18,24,322 votes on these seats. In the 2019 elections, BSP had fielded its candidates on 10 reserved seats, while SP had fielded its candidates on seven reserved seats. BJP had won 15 out of 17 seats, while BSP had won two seats.
