UP Government on Kanwar Yatra: The Uttar Pradesh government has defended its order in the Supreme Court to install nameplates outside shops on the Kanwar Yatra routes. Opposing the petitions filed against the order to install nameplates, the UP government said that its intention is to complete the Kanwar Yatra in a peaceful and orderly manner. The government said that this instruction was issued to remove the confusion caused by the names of the shops.

The government gave examples of some dhabas along with pictures. For example, the name of the shopkeeper running ‘Raja Ram Bhoj Family Tourist Dhaba’ is Wasim. Similarly, the owner of ‘Rajasthani Khalsa Dhaba’ is Furqan. Similarly, the owner of ‘Pandit Ji Vaishno Dhaba’ is Sanwar. Due to this, a situation of confusion arises.
Why did the UP government order the installation of nameplates?
The UP government has told the Supreme Court that it wants that the religious sentiments of the Kanwariyas carrying holy water barefoot should not be hurt even by mistake. Therefore, instructions were given to write the name outside the shop. It said that misunderstandings regarding food and drink on the Kanwar route have been the cause of fights and tension in the past as well. At the time when this decision was implemented, the UP government had said the same thing. It said that the names of the shops create confusion.
What did the opposition say on the nameplate controversy?
The opposition had called the UP government’s decision divisive. It had also termed it anti-Muslim and said that its aim was to divide the society. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had called the decision anti-constitutional. She had said, “Our Constitution guarantees every citizen that he will not be discriminated against on the basis of caste, religion, language or any other basis. The divisive order to put up boards with the names of the owners of carts, stalls and shops in Uttar Pradesh is an attack on our Constitution, our democracy and our shared heritage.”
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav had said that BJP people are spreading hatred in the society. These people are not going to succeed in this. The public has made them zero. The issue of Kanwar Yatra nameplate controversy also echoed in the Parliament, where opposition MPs had alleged that society is being divided through this.
