Maulana Umar Gautam, who was convicted in the nationwide conversion case, is originally from Panthuva in Fatehpur. He was born in a Hindu Rajput family in 1964. His name was Shyam Pratap Singh Gautam then. During his studies in Nainital, he met Nasir Khan of Bijnor district. After reading Nasir’s Islamic books, Shyam accepted Islam in 1984.
On the other hand, Maulana Kalim Siddiqui of Phulat did his BSc from Meerut and secured 57th rank in CPMT to become an MBBS doctor, but instead of becoming a doctor, he became a Maulana and started imparting religious education. He established his own madrasa and his trust received three crore rupees of funding from Gulf countries and also received a lot of money through hawala.
Within two and a half decades, the name of the madrasa of Phulat reached abroad. Farmer Amin Siddiqui’s son Kaleem (67) was a brilliant student. According to his nephew Hakeem Zafar Mahmood, after completing his BSc from Meerut College, instead of becoming a doctor, he got religious education from a madrasa in Lucknow and started teaching religious education in the madrasa Faizul Islam in the village.
Maulana laid the foundation of Jamia Imam Shah Waliullah Islamia in 1998 and never looked back. Umar established Islamic Centre in Batla House: After completing his studies, Maulana Umar Gautam started giving lectures on Islam in the country and the world. Not only this, by telling his story of converting from Hindu to Muslim, he started asking people to accept Islam.
